Dr Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a dream” discusses the discrimination against the race of African-Americans. His speech was written to influence his audience to take action, he did this through encouraging equality. In his speech, Dr King uses a variety of rhetoric techniques and audio ques to influence his American audience to enforce equal rights for both races.
Dr King has used a variation of rhetoric techniques, such as repetition, inclusive language and connotations, in order to convince his audience to think, that in order for America to truly be a great nation, there must be equality between the two races. Firstly, Dr King has used repetition in his speech; for example, “I have a dream” is repeated throughout the speech. This technique makes a word memorable, it enables a word to be held or recalled in the audience’s head: it helps to highlight the main ideas of the speech. Secondly, Dr King has used inclusive language, i.e. “we, our, you”. This technique encourages a sense of responsibility onto the audience and targets them as a particular group. Thirdly, Dr King has used connotations, such as, “so we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition”. This technique shows that Dr King seeks to persuade his audience to share his particular view on the event. Dr King has used the above rhetoric techniques, and more, to influence his audience to encourage equality between the races, in order for America to truly become a great nation.
Dr King has also used a number of audio ques, such as stress, volume and pause, in order to influence his audience that they need to work to achieve equality in order for America to truly be “the land of the free”. Firstly, Dr King uses stress in his voice towards particular words or phrases like “together” or “let freedom ring”. Dr King does this through showing that these particular words are key words and also to keep the audience interested in the issue. Secondly, Dr King uses a range of volume in his voice towards words/phrases like “let freedom ring” and “free at last”. Dr King does this with repeated words; this allows the audience to continue to be interested and to involve them in the issue, also to create a sense sympathy towards the issue discussed. Thirdly, Dr King has used a range of short and large pauses in his speech to influence his audience into thinking about the issue as well as keeping them enthusiastic towards the issue. Dr King has used the above audio ques, and more, to influence his audience that they need to work for equality in order for America to truly become the land of the free.
Dr King has used the structure of the speech to share with the audience the lack of equality shown between the races and how it has affected, not one but both races. He does this through persuading the audience to share his emotions towards the judgement of African-Americans. In conclusion, all above points on rhetoric techniques, audio ques and structure of the speech, all influence the audience to appeal to the call to action, given in the conclusion of the speech.
